One month has passed since the new EU tachograph regulations came into force for certain light commercial vehicles involved in international freight transport. The changes represent one of the most significant regulatory updates for van operators in recent years.

Since 1 July 2026, vehicles between 2.5 and 3.5 tonnes used for international road haulage must comply with tachograph requirements that were previously associated mainly with heavy goods vehicles. As a result, operators must now accurately record driving times, breaks, and rest periods while ensuring compliance with EU transport regulations.

For many transport companies, the new rules require a review of everyday operating procedures. Journey times that previously appeared straightforward may now need to be adjusted to accommodate mandatory breaks and rest periods. Route planning has become increasingly important, particularly on longer international journeys where border crossings, port procedures, and ferry schedules all play a role in maintaining compliance.

The impact is particularly noticeable for operators involved in European road haulage between the UK and mainland Europe. Ferry departure times, port arrival windows, and customs related procedures can all affect available driving hours. Careful planning is therefore essential to avoid unnecessary delays and ensure drivers remain compliant throughout the journey.

At Eurogate Connect, we work with transport companies across Europe to help optimise freight movements and identify the most effective routing options. With access to more than 500 ferry routes and a team experienced in international transport operations, we support hauliers in adapting to changing regulations while maintaining reliable transit times.

If the new van tachograph requirements have changed your transport planning, ferry bookings, or driver scheduling, our team can help you find solutions that support both compliance and efficiency.
